The University of Notre Dame will host Tennessee State University (TSU) for an exciting competition on the football field and new opportunities beyond the game. Notre Dame seeks to use this inaugural game against a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) football team as a catalyst to explore collaborative partnerships with TSU, develop productive connections with the HBCU community, and better engage with members of the South Bend community. Through feature content pieces and a robust list of special events, the University invites guests and the community to cultivate and strengthen relationships, share expertise, and explore common goals.

Distinct and celebrated universities in their own right, the values and histories of Notre Dame and TSU align in many ways – including shared commitments to educational access and equity, civil rights, service, and building community among students. The schools have played a critical role in providing educational access and equity to those facing barriers to inclusion at other universities. Each has also created opportunities to build community among students - which is central to each university’s mission. Saturday’s matchup is a continuation of partnerships and connections Notre Dame, its programs and people have had with the HBCU community over the years.

Dive into the historical and cultural significance behind the game while exploring how education, faith, and college sports can help foster connections among diverse communities in this ND Works podcast featuring JP Abercrumbie, executive associate athletics director for culture and engagement at Notre Dame.

A number of unique events will take place this weekend. Indicated with a “TSUND Special Event” logo, the events will focus on HBCU history and future outlook as well as cultural enrichment, community engagement, and individual and collective education. Many events are free and open to the public.
