The University of Notre Dame is known for having one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation, with sacred landmarks such as the Main Building, Basilica, and Grotto. Its scenic grounds just got better with the addition of Our Lady of the Lake World Peace Plaza, located west of the Grotto.

The plaza was presented through the legacy of William Pulte, master builder and community member, who had a passion for world peace and shared it with all those he encountered. At the focal point of the plaza stands a granite infinity fountain inscribed with A Prayer for World Peace in six different languages, including English, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and French. Ninety-seven percent of the world’s population can read at least one of the six inscribed languages. Adjacent to the fountain is a beautiful dock overlooking St. Mary’s Lake, with nearby landscaping of beautiful plants and trees to complete the plaza.

Our Lady of the Lake World Peace Plaza is perfectly placed for an escape from the hustle and bustle of campus life. It has a great vantage point and is a slice of serenity where visitors can sit down and enjoy the natural sights and sounds around them. Not only does it add to the scenery of the lake, but it also is a great location for reflection and prayer to all who visit.

A Prayer for World Peace

Dear God, thank you for all creation. In the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth and all teachers of peace who inspire the many faith traditions, help me, and all the people of the world, learn how to replace hate, war, oppression, and division with love, peace, freedom, and reconciliation. Help me to embody Your love in my relationships with my family and friends, strangers—even my enemies. I commit myself to this sacred task throughout my life. So let it be.
