Cooking with Cops: A Sense of Unity

2 chefs helping 2 young kids cook in the kitchen

Crafted by Executive Chef Calvin Metts, Cooking with Cops brings local youth and law enforcement into the kitchen of Morris Inn to bake up more than just a meal for families.

The program began in 2018 as a way to foster positive interactions between young people and police, while countering negative perceptions of law enforcement. A dozen kids from the community were welcomed with white aprons and official paper chef hats. They were partnered with a Notre Dame Police Department officer and led through a three-course meal to be served to their families.

Since its inception, the program has evolved into a cherished tradition that sparks creativity in the kitchen and introduces participants to healthy eating and careers in public safety and culinary arts. Under the continued guidance of Chef Metts, the program has expanded to collaborate with local schools, allowing students to showcase their cooking skills and share a newfound passion with their friends and family of South Bend.
