10 Ways to Unwind on Campus

Author: Molly Di Carlo

Blue skies encompass the top of the Golden Dome and Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The lakes sit in front of the Golden Dome and Basilica and purple, bloomed trees line the edge of the lake.

Whether you’re needing an hour or a few minutes to break away from the everyday grind, there are plenty of spots to unwind on campus, and even a few hidden gems perfect for some relaxation.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart
One of Notre Dame’s most sacred places on campus is the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The University Church helps serve the needs of students, faculty and staff, and serves as a beacon for spirituality. Attend Mass, or take a quiet walk throughout the space for some peaceful moments.

The Lakes
The same spring-fed lakes that captivated Father Edward Sorin in 1842 still gracefully buffer the northwest edge of the Notre Dame campus. St. Mary's Lake to the west and St. Joseph's Lake to the east serve as a park and nature preserve, but in the early days they provided food, ice, marl for brick and water for steam. Visit the Our Lady of the Lake World Peace Plaza while you’re touring the lakes - a granite infinity fountain with a prayer for world peace inscribed in six different languages and a beautiful dock overlooking St. Mary's Lake. And, if that’s not enough, each lake has a picturesque walking/jogging trail around it - complete with benches for rest stops.

The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes
To Notre Dame students and alumni, the Grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments. Light a candle, say a prayer, and spend some quiet reflection here. The Rosary is prayed every day at 6:45 p.m. every day of the year, rain or shine.

Ivan’s Cafe inside Raclin Murphy Museum of Art
Located inside the new Raclin Murphy Museum of Art - home to one of the nation’s oldest and most esteemed academic art museums - Ivan’s Cafe is your culinary destination to explore the arts. Revel in the art throughout the museum, visit the Mary Queen of Families Chapel on the second floor, and then enjoy a coffee and pastry from Notre Dame Executive Pastry Chef Sinai Vespie.

Wind Family Fireside Terrace at Morris Inn
Considered one of the most beautiful places to dine al fresco in the middle of campus, the Wind Family Fireside Terrace sits behind Morris Inn and serves bites and beverages from Rohr’s restaurant. Not in the mood for a meal, relax by the fire pits on the terrace and enjoy a view of the stars, right in the middle of campus.

Walking and Running Paths
Take in the beauty of campus with walking and running paths located throughout Notre Dame’s picturesque grounds. Reflect on your day and unwind from stress by taking in the views of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and Main Building. Find all of the paths here.

Hesburgh Library Lawn
When you need a break with a great backdrop, head to Library Lawn. With views of Touchdown Jesus and Notre Dame Stadium, this spot can’t be missed for a brief rest.

Beth and Lous Holtz Grand Reading Room
After all of your travels and walks throughout campus, you might be looking for a place to relax indoors. Hesburgh Library features a second location on our list - and one perfect for a bit of respite. Head into the Beth and Lou Holtz Family Grand Reading Room for a quiet space to read, meditate, or relax.

Warren Golf Course  Back Patio
There’s one place on campus that feels like a bit of vacation - even for those who tee off there regularly. Visit the patio at Warren Golf Course for resort-like views over serene greens, nestled behind the clubhouse on the course’s 250 acres. Grab a bite to eat, a drink, or relax after your round on the multi-tier terrace that overlooks the 18th green.

Lawn near Bond Hall
Picnic anyone? The lawns surrounding Bond Hall provide the perfect spot for a picnic lunch. With views of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Main Building, and The Lakes, you’re in the center of it all.
